Here are five outstanding RPGs released since 2015, based on their Metacritic ratings. While the scores might not universally represent every player’s perspective, this list serves as a helpful guide to some of the must-play role-playing games from recent years. As someone who has played nearly all the games on this list, I can confidently say that they are well worth your time. Let’s dive into the five best RPGs since 2015, according to Metacritic. Note that I’m only including games with a Metascore of 90 or higher.
NieR: Automata – 91
NieR: Automata is a philosophical masterpiece cleverly disguised as a JRPG, complete with a fair amount of fanservice. Its narrative delves into themes of existence, humanity, and the meaning of life, making it a must-play for enthusiasts of existential philosophy, like Sartre and Nietzsche. The game boasts one of the best-designed open worlds of 2018. While it might be an unconventional RPG for some, its masterful storytelling makes it a truly remarkable game.
Bloodborne – 92
Bloodborne, often considered FromSoftware’s finest work, maintains its reputation even after the release of Elden Ring. It offers a remarkably polished gaming experience within a meticulously crafted world and features one of the most outstanding Lovecraftian/Cosmic horror storylines in the history of gaming. This game differs from the Dark Souls series with its emphasis on fast-paced combat and parrying over blocking, leaving players eager for a sequel. Unfortunately, it’s not available on PC, but PlayStation owners should not miss out.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – 94
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an iconic entry in the open-world RPG genre, enhancing every aspect of its predecessors. What stands out is its exceptional quest design and the myriad of outcomes, many of which aren’t even tied to the main story. This game demands multiple playthroughs to truly uncover its extensive content. Don’t forget the marvelous expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, both delivering remarkable quests and narratives.
Elden Ring – 96
Elden Ring, with an impressive Metascore of 96, ranks among the highest-rated RPGs on Metacritic. Set in an expansive and beautifully crafted open world designed by Hidetaka Miyazaki in collaboration with George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring offers an unparalleled gaming experience, both in terms of lore and gameplay. With greater gameplay freedom and variety than any other FromSoftware game, it boasts over 200 hours of content. The deliberate world design and the upcoming expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, promise even more excitement.
Baldur’s Gate 3 – 96
Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studios made a significant impact on the gaming industry, earning high praise shortly after its release. Some even consider it one of the greatest RPGs of all time, and for good reason. Set in the D&D universe, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a party-based RPG with compelling stories and well-crafted characters. What sets it apart is the absence of microtransactions, which has garnered Larian Studios widespread acclaim from both fans and critics. Missing out on this exceptional RPG is not an option.
